At the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF), we believe that access to sports can transform lives. In 2022, we proudly distributed our largest grant program ever—3,256 grants valued at $6.2 million—to support people with physical disabilities in pursuing sports and active lifestyles. From first-time applicants to elite Paralympic competitors, these grants empower individuals across the globe to unlock their potential through adaptive sports.

Since our founding in 1994, CAF’s world-wide Grant Program has remained focused on removing financial barriers by providing funding for essential adaptive sports equipment not typically covered by medical insurance. This includes running prosthetics, handcycles, sport wheelchairs, adaptive training tools, as well as travel, coaching, and competition expenses.
“We believe sports is a pathway to more in life and that’s why we are committed to providing access to equipment, travel and competition expenses for athletes of all abilities across a wide variety of sports and activities,” said Kristine Entwistle, CAF Chief Executive Director. “We were proud to support nearly 700 first time applicants, increase the number of grants to youth under 18, and provide access to some of the most innovative sports equipment available.”
This year’s grant distribution supported 83 different sports, including track and field, wheelchair basketball, cycling, surfing, fly-fishing, sled hockey, Nordic and alpine skiing, wheelchair rugby, adaptive fitness training, and outdoor recreation. Grants reached recipients in all 50 states and 29 countries, serving people ranging in age from 2 to 79 years old.

CAF’s grant presentations go beyond funding—they create inspiring moments. This year, athletes received surprise grant presentations from Olympic snowboarder Shaun White, NFL quarterback Drew Brees, NFL Hall of Famer Andre Reed, Ironman champion Cam Wurf, ultra-endurance athlete David Goggins, and Team USA wheelchair basketball co-captain Steve Serio.

In an unprecedented year featuring both Summer and Winter Paralympic Games only six months apart, CAF proudly supported over 55% of Paralympians competing in Tokyo and Beijing. CAF athletes brought home 101 medals, showcasing the incredible achievements possible when opportunity meets support. CAF remains dedicated to nurturing the next generation of Paralympic athletes and strengthening Team USA.

For three decades, CAF’s exclusive prosthetic partner Össur has provided thousands of people with limb loss and limb difference the tools to pursue active lifestyles. In 2022, CAF awarded 80 Össur prosthetic sports feet and knees to deserving recipients, continuing a legacy of empowerment through innovation.

Responding to increasing requests, CAF funded grants for e-assist adaptive cycling equipment for the first time, including retrofitting over 10 handcycles with this exciting technology. Additionally, 140 grants supported GRIT Freedom All-Terrain Wheelchairs designed for adventures on trails, gravel, sand, and snow—opening new possibilities for outdoor exploration.

CAF’s Operation Rebound program provided 295 grants totaling $535,000 to injured military members, veterans, and first responders. Nearly one-third were first-time recipients, with 34 Purple Heart recipients included. This program fosters athleticism and community for those who serve.

CAF’s grants complement a range of programs including the High School Adaptive Sports Program, Adaptive Sports Camps and Clinics, Play With Purpose, and Community Education. Together, these programs cultivate mentorship, camaraderie, and support for athletes worldwide.
