CAF Athletes Showcase Teamwork, Determination, and Opportunity at Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon

Mariah Wyckoff

The Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon is known as one of the most iconic and demanding endurance events in the world. From the leap into San Francisco Bay to the challenging climbs and technical course sections, every athlete faces a test of preparation, perseverance, and adaptability.

This year, Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF) athletes took on the challenge through relay teams and individual competition, demonstrating the power of teamwork, resilience, and access to sport.

Relay Teams Bring Athletes Together

CAF was represented by two relay teams, each combining athletes and support crew across the swim, bike, and run disciplines.

CAF Relay Team 1 included Edery Herrera, Roosevelt Mooring, and guide Frank Acuri, who worked together across the course to complete the race in 4:34:13. Their performance highlighted the coordination, communication, and trust required to navigate one of the sport’s most complex and demanding events as a team.

CAF Relay Team 2 featured Lisa Carboni and Minh Nguyen, with Mark Walker stepping in at the last minute to complete the run after a roster change leading up to race day. The team crossed the finish line in 4:00:56, showcasing the adaptability and teamwork that often define endurance events, where preparation meets real-time problem-solving.

Individual Athletes Deliver Strong Performances

Athletes competing in the full triathlon also turned in impressive performances across the field.

Willie Stewart completed the course in 3:22:10 while competing within the adaptive athlete divisions under USA Triathlon classification. Racing against a highly competitive field, Stewart’s performance reflected the consistency, preparation, and focus required to succeed on a course that demands precision from start to finish.

Ed Blumenstock returned to Alcatraz once again, completing the full distance in 4:46:34 and earning first place in the 80+ age division for the second consecutive year. While he was the sole competitor in his division, Blumenstock’s achievement speaks to the dedication, longevity, and passion required to continue competing at one of the toughest races in endurance sports.

Building Momentum at Every Step

Across the course, athletes encountered defining moments that tested both physical and mental endurance. From the opening swim through the cold waters of San Francisco Bay to the final push toward the finish line, the Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon demands preparation, adaptability, and determination.

For CAF athletes, the event represented more than a finish time. It provided an opportunity to gain valuable racing experience, build confidence, and continue progressing toward personal athletic goals. Each mile reinforced what becomes possible when athletes have access to the equipment, training, and support they need to compete.

Community, Access, and Opportunity

Events like the Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon highlight the important role the community plays in creating greater access to sport.

From fundraisers who train and compete in support of CAF’s mission to athletes, guides, and teammates working together across disciplines, every participant contributes to a broader network that helps make athletic participation possible.

Through the CAF Grant Program and ongoing community partnerships, more individuals with physical disabilities have access to adaptive sports equipment, training, and opportunities to compete. Every race becomes more than a personal achievement—it becomes another step forward in advancing inclusion and expanding access across endurance sports.

Continuing the Mission

The achievements seen at Escape from Alcatraz reflect the impact of opportunity, support, and community. Whether racing as part of a relay team or taking on the full course individually, CAF athletes continue to demonstrate what is possible when barriers are removed and opportunities are created.

As athletes return to training and set their sights on future goals, their performances serve as a reminder that access to sport changes lives—and that every finish line can inspire the next starting line.
