Andre Szucs has spent his entire life redefining limits. Born with congenital limb differences in Brazil, he learned early on that the world wouldn’t always be built with him in mind—but that never stopped him from carving his own path. Whether it was skateboarding through busy city streets, competing in multiple sports as a kid, or conquering some of the toughest endurance races on the planet, Andre has always embraced challenges with unshakable determination.
Now, decades after first falling in love with mountain biking on the rugged trails of his hometown, Andre is preparing for his greatest two-wheeled test yet: the Leadville Trail 100 MTB in Colorado—a legendary 100-mile, high-altitude race that pushes even the strongest cyclists to their limits.

Andre’s love affair with mountain biking began in 1992 when a friend invited him on a ride that stretched far beyond his usual comfort zone.
“It was on a GT Timberline Chromoly when I first tried biking more than two miles nonstop,” Andre recalls. “I had a good friend who pushed me to go the distance. I was instantly hooked.”
For the next eight years, Andre spent nearly every weekend exploring the diverse terrain of Florianópolis, Santa Catarina. From coastal paths to rocky mountain trails, riding became more than just a hobby—it was his escape, his community, and his way of testing himself physically and mentally.
But as much as he loved the sport, life took him in a new direction.
In 2003, Andre made a life-changing decision: he sold his mountain bike to focus on swimming, a sport that would become his ticket to the global stage.
“I couldn’t afford to take a spill on my bike and risk my training in the pool,” Andre explains.
That decision led to a remarkable journey in paratriathlon and endurance racing. Andre’s commitment and drive propelled him to:
For Andre, these races were more than medals and finish lines—they were milestones proving that congenital limb differences didn’t define his potential.
Even as he pursued his own athletic dreams, Andre dedicated himself to helping others. For five years, he worked in the Orthotics and Prosthetics field, supporting thousands of people with disabilities across the United States.
Through mentoring and program coordination, he offered guidance to individuals navigating life with limb loss or differences. Today, Andre channels that same passion into developing advanced prosthetic technology, aiming to improve mobility and independence for amputees worldwide.
“I’ve always felt a responsibility to give back,” Andre says. “Mentorship and innovation are just as rewarding to me as crossing any finish line.”
After retiring from competitive swimming, Andre felt something missing. In 2010, he finally bought another mountain bike—this time on eBay—and the first ride brought an overwhelming sense of familiarity.
“As soon as I tried the bike, everything felt right,” Andre says with a grin. “I’M BACK.”
Since then, he’s thrown himself into the sport with renewed passion. Living in Boulder, Colorado—a mecca for outdoor athletes—Andre has been exploring high-altitude trails, refining his technical skills, and pushing his endurance to new heights.
Mountain biking reignited a part of Andre’s spirit that had been dormant for years, rekindling his love for exploration and grit in nature’s raw elements.

Known as one of the toughest mountain bike races in the world, the Leadville Trail 100 MTB is a brutal test of strength and resilience. Riders face:
For many cyclists, simply finishing Leadville is a lifetime achievement. For Andre, it represents something even more profound—a culmination of his decades-long journey through multiple sports, personal obstacles, and a relentless pursuit of physical challenge.
“Leadville is a dream for so many cyclists,” Andre says. “For me, having the chance to race it and see what I can achieve will be the pinnacle of my two-wheeled journey that started back in the days of cantilever brakes.”
Preparing for Leadville hasn’t been a solo endeavor. Andre has been training as part of Team CAF (Challenged Athletes Foundation), an organization dedicated to empowering individuals with physical challenges to live active lives through sports.
The support from CAF—through coaching, adaptive equipment, and community—has been instrumental in Andre’s journey back to competitive cycling.
“A special thank you to CAF and all the fundraisers,” Andre says. “This is only possible because of YOU. Being surrounded by people who believe in pushing boundaries has been an incredible source of motivation.”
When Andre isn’t on the trails or designing prosthetic components, he’s focused on what matters most: his wife and two daughters.
“It’s an amazing feeling to share these experiences with my family,” Andre says. “They’ve supported me through every step—from my swimming career to Ironman races, to mountain biking again. Leadville is as much for them as it is for me.”
Balancing family life with intense training schedules isn’t easy, but Andre views it as an opportunity to show his daughters the value of resilience, dedication, and chasing big dreams.
Looking Beyond Leadville
As race day approaches, Andre’s focus is on finishing strong, but his vision stretches further. He hopes to use his Leadville experience to inspire other adaptive athletes, showing that no challenge is insurmountable with the right mindset, support system, and determination.
“I want people to see that limitations are often just perceptions,” Andre says. “With the right tools and community, we can achieve things that once felt impossible.”
On August 12th, Andre Szucs will line up at the starting line of the Leadville Trail 100 MTB, surrounded by elite athletes, rugged mountains, and an unwavering belief in what’s possible. No matter the result, his journey—from a young boy riding trails in Brazil to a world-class endurance athlete and mentor—already proves what’s achievable when passion meets perseverance.
