Rebuilding Life After Trauma: Humberto Reyna’s Journey from Tragedy to Triathlon

CAF Staff

“The man that left the house that morning did not come home.” – Kay Reyna

On November 23, 2009, life changed forever for North Carolina State Trooper Humberto Reyna. Known across the state as the “poster boy” of the Highway Patrol—literally featured in recruitment ads—Humberto was respected for his athleticism, his dedication to service, and his relentless competitive spirit. But on that rainy morning, while responding to a crash on I-40 and I-85, Humberto’s patrol car was struck by a hydroplaning vehicle at 75 mph.

The force crushed his vehicle like an accordion. Humberto sustained multiple injuries—broken ribs and what initially seemed like a concussion—but the true extent of his trauma wouldn’t be discovered until later. Humberto had suffered a traumatic brain injury (TBI), setting him on a long, grueling journey to rebuild his life.

Life After Injury: A Family’s Commitment

When Humberto’s wife, Kay, received the devastating news, she had no idea how drastically their lives would change. “The man that left the house that morning did not come home,” Kay recalls. Since that day, Humberto has required 24/7 care and supervision. Kay dedicated herself to supporting his recovery—navigating complex medical needs, rehabilitation programs, and the emotional toll of brain injury.

Before the accident, Humberto thrived on activity. He was a right-handed golfer, a collegiate cross-country runner, a competitive swimmer, and a representative for North Carolina in the Highway Patrol’s Trooper Challenges. He once ran a fundraising event so far and for so long that organizers had to ask him to stop at 20 miles. Humberto loved movement—it was his identity.

After the accident, returning to an active lifestyle seemed impossible. But doctors encouraged physical activity as therapy, and Kay made it her mission to help Humberto reconnect with sports despite his new cognitive and physical challenges.

Finding Healing Through Adaptive Sports

It wasn’t easy. Humberto had to relearn many skills—swinging a golf club left-handed, adapting to balance issues with a recumbent bike, slowly returning to running, and regaining confidence in the water. “With traumatic brain injury, Humberto lost his social skills,” Kay explains. “But through sports, he found a way to heal. Group activities became therapeutic, helping him rebuild physically and socially.”

Kay’s research into resources for injured law enforcement officers led her to CAF’s Operation Rebound program—one of the few national initiatives that welcomes law enforcement officers alongside injured military and first responders. Operation Rebound provides grants, mentorship, and a supportive community, helping athletes like Humberto regain purpose and rediscover their competitive edge.

“CAF has been a lifesaver,” Kay says. “Nico Marcolongo, CAF’s Operation Rebound Program Director, has been a guiding light. His passion and encouragement have motivated Humberto to stay engaged and inspired.”

From Recovery to Racing

Humberto’s relentless determination and Operation Rebound’s support have reignited his competitive spirit. He’s currently training for Ironman Oceanside 70.3, a grueling event that includes a 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike ride, and 13.1-mile run. Fellow injured law enforcement officer and experienced triathlete Tom Giannettino is coaching Humberto through this journey, helping him prepare mentally and physically for race day.

Participating in triathlon represents far more than crossing a finish line—it’s a symbol of triumph over trauma. It’s proof that even after unimaginable injury, life can hold purpose, community, and hope.

A New Chapter of Strength and Inspiration

Fourteen years after that fateful day, Humberto may not be the same man who left his home in uniform, but he has transformed into something equally remarkable—a source of strength and inspiration for everyone who knows him.

Through grit, unwavering family support, and adaptive sports opportunities provided by CAF’s Operation Rebound, Humberto has rewritten his story. Today, he stands as a testament to resilience, courage, and the healing power of community.

When Humberto steps onto the Ironman Oceanside course, he won’t just be racing; he’ll be proving that with determination and the right support, it’s possible to rebuild not just a body, but a life.
