CAF-Idaho Mountain Biking Basecamp 2024: Empowering Riders, Building Community, and Hitting the Trails

CAF Staff

From trailside repairs to unforgettable rides through the Idaho foothills, the first-ever CAF-Idaho Mountain Biking Basecamp delivered a full-spectrum adventure for eight adaptive athletes. This multi-week program combined expert coaching, skill development, and community-building to create a one-of-a-kind experience tailored for riders with physical disabilities.

An Immersive Ride from Boise to Sun Valley

The Basecamp kicked off in May with three progressive local ride sessions (5/16, 5/23, and 6/13), followed by participation in the CAF-Idaho APEX Mountain Bike Adventure (5/30–6/2) including a race at Bogus Basin, and capped off with a destination weekend in Sun Valley (6/21–6/23). Each phase built on the last, giving athletes the chance to grow their confidence, refine their skills, and connect with fellow riders on and off the trail.

Skills. Confidence. Camaraderie.

Led by expert coaches Jet Turner and Christine Panagos, with additional support from Pat Dougherty and two experienced riders, the program welcomed participants of all skill levels. From basic bike maintenance to adaptive technique, every session was thoughtfully designed to meet athletes where they were and help them progress.

Highlights included:

  • Trails & Etiquette Talk with David Gordon, Ridge to Rivers Division Manager
  • Trailside Maintenance Workshop led by Mark Andrews of Mission43
  • Adaptive Bike Upkeep for better performance and independence
  • Group rides through Boise’s scenic Ridge to Rivers trails and Sun Valley’s world-class terrain

With support from CAF partner 100%, each athlete received high-performance helmets and sunglasses, ensuring they were fully equipped for the journey ahead.

A Personal Milestone for Every Rider

While every rider’s story was different, the shared theme of the Basecamp was progress—whether it was a first-ever trail ride or a return to the sport after injury. The small group format (8 riders) created space for meaningful mentorship and lasting friendships, making each mile more memorable.

By the Numbers

  • 8 adaptive riders
  • 5 ride sessions
  • 3 unique Idaho regions
  • 5 expert coaches & support riders
  • Countless personal breakthroughs

Special thanks to Ridge to Rivers, Mission43, and 100% for helping create an inclusive, empowering space where riders with physical disabilities could thrive.
