Josh Sweeney: A New Path After Service

Mariah Wyckoff

In 2009, while serving as a U.S. Marine Corps Scout sniper in Afghanistan, Josh Sweeney sustained life-changing injuries that resulted in the loss of both of his legs above the knee. As he began his recovery, he faced not only the physical challenges ahead but also the question of what came next.

During rehabilitation, Josh was introduced to adaptive sport. What began as a way to stay active quickly became something more. Through sled hockey, he found a renewed sense of purpose, community, and competition.

Sport was no longer just part of his life. It became a path forward.

From Recovery to the World Stage

Josh’s drive and determination carried him from rehabilitation to the highest level of competition. In 2014, he helped lead Team USA to a gold medal in sled hockey at the Sochi Paralympic Games, serving as team captain.

That same year, he was honored with the Pat Tillman Award at the ESPYs, recognizing his service, leadership, and commitment to others.

His journey reflects what becomes possible when athletes with physical disabilities have access to sport, opportunity, and the support needed to pursue their goals.

Continuing to Evolve as an Athlete

Josh’s athletic journey did not stop with sled hockey. He has continued to expand his pursuit of sport across disciplines, competing in paratriathlon, para Nordic skiing, and para cycling.

In 2022, he represented Team USA again at the Beijing Winter Paralympic Games in Nordic skiing. In 2023, he earned the title of USA Para Cycling Gravel National Champion.

Across every sport, the goal remains the same. To challenge limits, continue progressing, and represent what is possible.

Creating Opportunities for Others

Beyond his own competition, Josh is committed to creating opportunities for other athletes with physical disabilities. As a USAT Level 2 Certified Paratriathlon Coach and founder of JS Adaptive Sports LLC, he works to support athletes at all stages of their journey.

Through coaching, mentorship, and advocacy, he is helping to remove barriers and expand access to sport.

His work reflects a broader belief. When athletes have access, they gain more than competition. They gain confidence, community, and a path forward.

Power in Motion

Athletes like Josh Sweeney show what becomes possible when opportunity meets determination. From his first introduction to adaptive sport during rehabilitation to representing Team USA on the world stage, his journey continues to evolve.

With support from organizations like the Challenged Athletes Foundation, athletes with physical disabilities can take that first step, continue building momentum, and pursue their goals in sport and in life.
