Finding Their Mark: CAF-Idaho’s Para-Archery Clinic Builds Confidence and Community

Chelsea Day

The satisfying thwack of arrows hitting targets echoed through the Idaho Outdoor Fieldhouse this spring as 19 archers gathered for something special: a chance to discover (or rediscover) the ancient sport of archery in an environment designed just for them.

From March 28 through April 25, 2026, CAF-Idaho hosted a five-week para-archery clinic that brought together athletes of all ages and abilities for an introduction to competitive archery. What began as lessons in proper stance and bowstring technique evolved into something far more meaningful: a community of archers supporting each other’s growth, one arrow at a time.

Learning from the Best

The clinic wasn’t just about shooting arrows. It was about learning from someone who had stood on the world’s biggest stage. Coach Samantha Tucker, a member of the 2016 U.S. Paralympic Archery Team, brought elite-level expertise and firsthand competition experience to every session at the Idaho Outdoor Fieldhouse.

Under Tucker’s guidance, participants dove deep into the fundamentals that form the backbone of successful archery: range safety protocols, proper shooting form, breathing techniques, and the mental focus required to consistently hit the mark. But perhaps most importantly, Tucker understood that every archer’s journey is unique. She tailored her instruction to meet each participant where they were, adapting techniques to individual needs and abilities.

Building Skills, Building Confidence

The five-week format allowed for genuine skill progression. Week by week, archers who initially struggled to draw their bows were clustering arrows near the bullseye. The indoor facility at the Idaho Outdoor Fieldhouse provided the perfect controlled environment: no wind, no weather concerns, just pure focus on technique and improvement.

Sessions started with range safety review and equipment checks, moving on to focus on form and consistency with individualized coaching and technique refinement, group shooting sessions with peer support, and reflection on progress.

Beyond the technical skills, participants gained something equally valuable: confidence. For some, this clinic represented their first foray into a new-to-them sport since acquiring their disability. The supportive atmosphere, expert coaching, and accessible facility combined to create an environment where trying something new felt safe and achievable.

A Community of Champions

CAF Ambassadors Travis Ricks and Josh Sweeney were on hand throughout the series, offering encouragement, sharing their own athletic journeys, and reminding participants that sports can be a powerful tool for independence and personal growth. Their presence reinforced a core CAF principle: athletes with physical disabilities belong in sports, and the adaptive sports community thrives when experienced athletes lift up newcomers.

The camaraderie among participants became one of the clinic’s defining features. Archers cheered each other’s successes, offered tips they’d learned, and created a genuine support network that extended beyond the shooting line.

Why Archery Matters

Para-archery offers unique benefits for athletes with physical disabilities. It’s a sport that emphasizes precision, focus, and technique over raw physical power. Athletes who use wheelchairs, have limb differences, or experience other physical disabilities can compete on equal footing with appropriate equipment adaptations and technique modifications.

The sport also builds transferable skills: concentration, patience, goal-setting, and the resilience to keep trying after a missed shot. These lessons extend far beyond the archery range, influencing how participants approach challenges in their daily lives.

For the athletes at CAF-Idaho’s clinic, archery became more than a new hobby. It became a pathway to discovering what they’re truly capable of achieving.

The CAF Difference

Programs like this five-week archery clinic exist because of CAF’s commitment to providing access, equipment, and expert coaching to athletes with physical disabilities. The Foundation’s support removes barriers that might otherwise prevent participation: access to specialized facilities, quality coaching from Paralympic-level athletes, and the equipment needed to safely learn the sport.

The clinic was offered at no cost to participants thank to generous funding from the J.A. and Kathryn Albertson Family Foundation, ensuring that financial constraints wouldn’t keep anyone from discovering their potential on the archery range. This commitment to accessibility reflects CAF’s broader mission: every athlete deserves the opportunity to pursue their sporting dreams.
