CAF Brings Back High Fives and Finish Lines to Reunite the Community and Raise Millions

CAF Staff

October 22–24, 2021 — The Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF) is set to welcome athletes, supporters, and fans back for one of its most anticipated traditions: the CAF Community Challenge powered by Strava and the 28th annual Aspen Medical Products San Diego Triathlon Challenge.

After a year of virtual gatherings, the in-person return marks more than just a calendar date—it’s a reunion of the global CAF community. Over three days, Bonita Cove in Mission Bay will be the backdrop for a celebration of inclusion, resilience, and athletic spirit.

A Weekend for Every Athlete

The Community Challenge weekend brings together athletes of all ages and abilities—from first-time participants to Paralympians—to compete side-by-side. Whether it’s a youth adaptive surf clinic, a one-mile bay swim, or a 40-mile scenic bike ride, each event is a testament to the idea that sport can unite, inspire, and change lives.

Funds raised throughout the weekend directly support CAF’s mission to provide adaptive sports equipment, training, and experiences for people with physical disabilities.

“The Community Challenge, powered by Strava, is one of the most inclusive sports environments where athletes of all ages and abilities experience first-hand the power of sport to pull people together,” said Kristine Entwistle, CAF Associate Director. “We are thrilled to provide a safe and unparalleled sports experience for all after such an unprecedented year.”

Star Athletes and Empowering Role Models

The 2021 lineup features a roster of well-known names in adaptive and endurance sports:

  • Rudy Garcia-Tolson, Scout Bassett, Hunter Woodhall, Roderick Sewell, Alana Nichols, Zion Clark, Willie Stewart, and Sarah Reinertsen
  • Paralympic medalists including Steve Serio, Kendall Gretsch, Lauren Parker, Justin Phongsavanh, and Trenten Merrill
  • Power couple Kym and Erik Hightower, both Paralympic athletes
  • Triathlon Hall of Fame inductees Michellie Jones, Kathleen McCartney, Julie Moss, and Scott Tinley
  • Local leaders like former San Diego Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman

Their presence on the start lines, in clinics, and at the finish inspires the next generation of athletes while giving participants a rare chance to share the field with legends.

Event Highlights

Friday, October 22 kicks off with a youth adaptive surf clinic and open water swim clinic, followed by the Million Dollar Challenge ride-in, where over 175 cyclists will complete a 640-mile journey from San Francisco to San Diego. The evening concludes with CAF’s Celebration of Abilities Awards Dinner, honoring athletes and partners whose achievements over the past year have redefined what’s possible.

Saturday, October 23 features a full slate of adaptive sports clinics, including:

  • Össur Running & Mobility
  • Wheelchair Tennis
  • Adaptive Swimming

Over 150 athletes with physical disabilities from across the nation will receive personalized coaching, mentorship, and the encouragement needed to continue pursuing their athletic goals.

Sunday, October 24 is the main event: the Aspen Medical Products San Diego Triathlon Challenge, often called “the best day in tri.” Participants will take on a one-mile swim in the calm waters of Mission Bay, a choice of 25- or 40-mile scenic bike rides, and a 10.5-mile run course that winds past landmarks like Cabrillo Monument and Mt. Soledad.

The day also includes:

  • EōS Fitness Tour de Cove stationary cyclethon
  • Philadelphia Insurance Challenged Athlete Kids Run
  • EōS Fitness Yoga by the Bay
  • 5K walk/run

“The energy is electric, the athletes are inspiring, and the love for the mission is loud and clear,” said longtime CAF supporter Tina Weidenkeller of Long Beach, CA. “Whether you’re a beginner or competitive athlete, you will leave inspired to do the sports you love and make a difference in the lives of others.”

More Than a Race Weekend

This year’s event will be held in careful coordination with local health guidelines to ensure a safe experience for all. For those who can’t make it to San Diego, virtual participation options are available—offering a chance to set a personal challenge and raise funds from anywhere in the world.

Sponsors like Strava, Aspen Medical Products, EōS Fitness, Nike, Össur, Toyota, Philadelphia Insurance Companies, and many others make it possible for CAF to remove financial barriers for athletes in need.

Be Part of the Movement

Whether in the water, on the bike, at the finish line, or cheering from home, every participant and supporter plays a role in helping CAF continue its work. Together, we can ensure that no athlete is sidelined because of a physical disability.
