David Rozelle’s story is one defined by service, determination and the belief that life after injury can still be filled with possibility. A U.S. Army veteran and below-knee amputee, David has become a resource and role model for service members injured in recent conflicts.
While serving in Iraq as the commander of 140 troops with the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, David’s life changed forever when a landmine exploded beneath his Humvee, resulting in the loss of part of his right leg.
Following the injury, David was evacuated home and began a year-long rehabilitation process. Like many injured service members, he faced the challenge of rebuilding strength, confidence and independence after a life-changing moment. Through that process, sports became a powerful part of his recovery.

Just eight months after his injury, David completed his first triathlon at the CAF San Diego Triathlon Challenge in 2004. That experience introduced him to the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF) community and marked the beginning of a lasting connection with the organization.
“CAF opened the door for me to continue being an athlete.” – David Rozelle
David’s commitment to serving others continued long after his injury. One year to the day after the landmine explosion, he returned to command of his unit and deployed back to Iraq. His return marked a historic moment, becoming the first service member in modern times to return to a combat command after sustaining a significant combat injury.
His journey challenged expectations around recovery, leadership and what injured service members could accomplish. David demonstrated that physical injury does not define a person’s ability to contribute, lead or pursue ambitious goals.
Through his experience, David became a powerful example for other injured service members searching for their own path forward.

David’s impact extended beyond his own athletic achievements. His story helped inspire the creation of CAF Operation Rebound, a program dedicated to supporting troops, veterans and first responders who have sustained permanent physical injuries.
As a mentor and role model for Operation Rebound, he continues to share his experience and encourage others to discover the physical and emotional benefits of sports.
Through CAF support, he has pursued some of the most challenging endurance events in the world. He represented CAF at the Ford Ironman Coeur d’Alene, where he was recognized with the Ford Ironman Everyday Hero Award. The honor recognized his dedication, perseverance and commitment to showing others what is possible after injury.
Driven by a desire to continue pushing himself, David set his sights on the 2006 Ironman Triathlon World Championship in Kona, Hawaii. There, he improved his previous performance by more than an hour, finishing with an impressive time of 12:46:26.

CAF Operation Rebound provides unparalleled sports opportunities and support to troops, veterans of any branch of service and first responders who have served honorably and sustained permanent physical injuries.
The program helps remove barriers by providing grants that support participation in sports and athletic events. Funding may help cover:
