At Mayfair Elementary School in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the fourth-grade students spent part of their International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum exploring the concept of Caring. Caring, in the IB learning profile, means showing compassion, empathy, and respect for others—values that are essential to building inclusive communities.
As part of this unit, teacher Erika Moore presented the students with a challenge: take the phrase “Anything is Possible” and write an essay on how it applies to people with physical disabilities. To help inspire their work, the class learned about the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF) and the story of CAF athlete and triathlete Glenn Hartrick, who continues to compete at a high level after becoming paralyzed in a cycling accident.

Through YouTube videos and online research, students discovered how CAF empowers individuals with physical disabilities to pursue active lifestyles through sports. They explored stories of athletes who have overcome barriers, from first-time participants in local 5Ks to Paralympic medalists.
The class also learned about Hartrick’s connection to the 2Ns Foundation, which promotes fitness and inclusion, and how his resilience has made him a role model for athletes of all abilities.
Students were encouraged to include examples from CAF athlete stories in their essays. Many drew connections between the challenges faced by athletes with disabilities and the inspirational words of historical African American leaders such as Nelson Mandela, Wole Soyinka, Langston Hughes, and Martin Luther King Jr. These quotes, studied earlier in the month, became powerful anchors for their reflections on perseverance, equality, and opportunity.

As a summative project, students created mind maps—visual representations of their research, key themes, and personal takeaways. Recommended research topics included:
The mind maps combined facts, inspirational quotes, keywords, and illustrations, helping students organize their learning and see how common themes of resilience and inclusion appear across different life experiences.

Mayfair Elementary’s project reflects the goals of the CAF School Program, which provides educators with the tools and resources to teach disability awareness, inclusion, and the power of sport. Through interactive lessons, athlete videos, and discussion guides, the program helps students see people with physical disabilities as athletes, leaders, and peers—not defined by their disability, but by their abilities and determination.
By integrating CAF athlete stories into an existing IB curriculum, Erika Moore’s class brought those concepts to life. Students didn’t just learn about inclusion; they practiced it by engaging with real stories and imagining how they could contribute to a more accessible world.
For these fourth graders, the phrase “Anything is Possible” became more than a classroom theme—it became a belief grounded in real-world examples. They learned that with the right support, resources, and mindset, people of all abilities can achieve greatness.
Their essays and mind maps are a testament to what happens when students are given the opportunity to explore empathy and inclusion through the lens of sport. As Erika shared, “They made the connections on their own, and I couldn’t be prouder.”
Whether you teach in an IB school, a public district, or a private academy, CAF’s School Program can be adapted to any grade level or subject area. Inspire your students with athlete stories, interactive projects, and activities that build a culture of inclusion.
